JOB DESCRIPTION - VOCATIONAL ASSISTANT

The Vocational Assistant should have experience or training in working with developmentally disabled adults. The Vocational Assistant will be directly responsible to the Program Director or Designated Coordinator/QMRP. He or she should be knowledgeable in training and behavioral intervention techniques.

The Vocational Assistant must be at least 18 years of age and willing to submit to a criminal background check and a driver's license check upon employment and annually thereafter. Results may disqualify the individual from employment. This position requires driving of agency vehicles.

Essential Functions
Orientation/Job Duties

1. Become fully acquainted with and adhere to the philosophy, agency policies, procedures and operation of the agency. This is done through:

  A. Orientation and in-service training.
  B. Conference with the Director, Program Director and Designated Coordinator.
  C. Reference material provided by the program.

2. Assist in planning and carry out all vocational activities in assigned work area.

3. Help evaluate and plan programs to meet each individual's needs.

   a. Regularly observe and record each individual's performance.
   b. Attend and participate in scheduled annual meetings.
   c. Relate to all staff involved with the individual any significant behavioral or functional changes seen in individuals.
   d. Consult and work with all staff involved with the individual in the implementation of any change in program and report any behavioral incidents and document accordingly.
   e. Assist Program Director/Designated Coordinator in assembling and writing quarterly and annual client reports.
   f. Turn quarterly and annual reports in to Program Director for final revision and/or approval.

4. Assist in developing a meaningful and effective daily program for all individuals in order to meet individual goals set at annual meetings.

5. Maintain records of overall programs and individual progress evaluations.

6. Assist in other following areas of program as scheduled and required:

   a. Be present and work at coffee break time as scheduled.
   b. Perform personal hygiene (toileting, etc) tasks as scheduled, and when needed. Assist in lifting/transferring consumers to and from wheelchair to toilet and back.
   c. Be present in work area when scheduled and work directly with consumers in work area.
   d. Assist consumers upon arrival into the building if needed, in hanging up coats, putting away lunches and getting to work areas.
   e. Assist consumers in preparation to go home at the end of the work day by assisting with coats, etc. and providing assistance to the vehicle if needed.
   f. Clean up work area at the end of each day prior to leaving.

•  When working with consumers at community sites, provide guidance and training by working along side the consumer, performing the same tasks. This will help ensure successful work experiences.

8. Know and understand each individual's program and follow through on those programs.

9. Keep work area safe, clean and neat during the working day.

10. Enforce safe work habits in the work area.

11. Take breaks at scheduled times and do not exceed those limits.

12. Report all injuries or illness to the Program Director, Designated Coordinator/QMRP.

13. Attend all staff meetings and inservice training sessions as required.

14. Conform to all agency policies and procedures as established by the Board of Directors.

15. Respect the privacy of all individuals and their families and comply with the Data Privacy Act.

16. Treat all individuals, parents, guardians, visitors and fellow workers with respect and courtesy.

17. Serve as a representative of, and in the best interests of Pinewood, Inc. in community relations.

Transportation

1. Maintain a current driver's license and clean driving record and drive agency vehicles for program purposes as requested.

2. Make sure each consumer is wearing a seat belt or is securely fastened into wheelchair safety restraints.

3. Transport consumers to and from the agency or work site in a safe manner.

4. Act as Transportation Aide on those routes requiring aides.

Accountability

Arrive to work on time and work continuously throughout the shift as per agency guidelines. Regular attendance is essential. Employees are required to satisfy the essential functions of their job description.

Physical Requirements

Employees must be able to bend, twist, lift/push a minimum of 50 pounds.

Equipment Used

Wheelchairs, walkers, transfer belts, work project supplies - (may vary at each site).

Due to the possibility of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, this position may be at risk for Hepatitis B and HIV infection.
